How it works

Choose what you want to find. Find my selling price takes your cost and the margin you want to keep, and gives the price to charge. Check my margin takes your cost and your current price, and shows the profit, margin and markup.

Margin is the share of the selling price you keep. Markup is what you added on top of cost. They are not the same: adding 50% to a ₹600 cost (₹900) keeps only a 33% margin, while a 50% margin needs a ₹1,200 price.

Enter cost and price on the same tax basis, usually both without GST. Include freight, packaging and payment charges in the cost if you want them counted.

Formula

  • Selling price for a target margin = cost ÷ (1 − margin ÷ 100)
  • Profit = selling price − cost
  • Margin % = profit ÷ selling price × 100
  • Markup % = profit ÷ cost × 100

Worked example

Find my selling price: a kurti costs ₹600 and you want to keep a 50% margin. Price it at ₹600 ÷ 0.50 = ₹1,200. You keep ₹600 on each sale, a 100% markup on cost.

Check my margin: the same kurti selling at ₹1,000 earns ₹400 profit, a 40% margin and a 66.67% markup.

How to use these calculators well

Keep every number on the same basis. If your selling price excludes GST, your cost should exclude input GST too. Mixing a tax-inclusive price with a tax-exclusive cost is the most common reason a margin looks better than it really is.

Use real numbers from your own records. Last month's bills, purchase invoices and appointment calendar give far better answers than guesses. vkRetA keeps those records for you, so the inputs for these calculators are already in your workspace.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin divides profit by the selling price; markup divides profit by the cost. A ₹600 item sold for ₹1,200 has a 50% margin and a 100% markup.

Should I include GST in the cost and price?

Use the same basis for both. Most businesses calculate margin on prices without GST, because GST collected is passed on to the government.

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. The values you enter are not submitted or stored.

Does vkRetA do this arithmetic on my bills?

Yes. On every bill vkRetA works out GST per line with the CGST and SGST or IGST split, applies coupon rules and updates stock and customer history. The calculator is for planning before you set prices.
